Charging for infusion, injection and hydration administration is complex. Today’s observation workflow results in a manual determination of CPT codes, missing out on potential productivity gains from automation. In addition, when ED and observation encounters are charged separately this can result in a need to adjust the ED CPT codes, resulting in re-work and potentially impacting productivity. The current workflow can also result in loss of revenue opportunities when facilities don’t have a workflow to capture these charges. In this session, you'll hear how Cerner’s Infusion and Injection module allows an organization’s facility charge ticket (FCT) functionality to expand and include the entire outpatient portion of a patients’ encounter. This expansion allows us to include observation and outpatient in a bed encounters to utilize the Infusion and Injection module to calculate CPT codes based on site and route of administration along with duration of time for infusions and hydrations, eliminating manual charging. The ED nurse can document that medication administration is continuing to observation and will allow observation nursing staff to document the IV stop time in the appropriate location to fulfill the IV stop time task.

In this client HIT talk, you'll hear Geisinger and Keystone ACO executives share examples of how data strategies and the HealtheIntent platform helped identify and address an opportunity that helped contribute to quality outcomes. Speakers will discuss the journey moving to common, unified data platform to overcome operational challenges, attributing patients to providers and the integrating insights into the provider workflow. When looking at the data for inpatient rehab admissions, Geisinger found it was higher than the national average and realized there was an opportunity to improve. Care design was disjointed and discharge trajectory and treatment patterns were dependent on regional culture and historical patterns rather than what was best for both quality care delivery and most cost effective with resources. Providers were also already focused on quality measures; however, the benchmarks were driven by varied in-house standards versus evaluating against industry best practices.

In this session, you'll learn how the Department of Defense (DoD) and Mission Health facilitated rapid vaccination protocols. Six years ago, Cerner proposed to the DoD a seldom-used commercial tool built for the mass delivery of flu vaccines. The intent was to meet its requirement for the rapid vaccination of military recruits and deployable personnel. Candidly, the commercial market for the capability was there, but the desire to prioritize spending on it was not, so Cerner didn’t invest considerably in it. In partnership with the DoD, Cerner evolved the tool considerably and it's now used in recruitment centers and in preparation for deployments as intended. Because the DoD is using Cerner’s commercial product, the tool became available for use by clients and Mission Health fully leveraged it. When COVID-19 began, the commercial environment needed such a product practically overnight. Fortunately for Cerner clients, the DoD-Cerner partnership ensured the tool was ready for primetime on day one.

Early in the pandemic, researchers at the ChristianaCare Value Institute, an embedded research institute within the healthcare system with a mission to improve health outcomes for all, pivoted its focus toward understanding the impact of COVID-19 in its community and healthcare system. The Cerner COVID-19 data set, fueled in part by the Cerner Learning Health Network, provided the opportunity to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on rare, but critically important, clinical subgroups. Led by Stephanie Guarino, MD, a hematology oncologist with the ChristianaCare Center for Special Healthcare Needs, and Michael Vest, MD, a critical care medicine specialist, two investigations were launched in collaboration with Value Institute data managers, biostatisticians and epidemiologists. The studies included patients living with sickle cell disease (SCD) and those needing mechanical ventilation. SCD affects more than 100,000 Americans, primarily racial and ethnic minority groups who experience health disparities likely exacerbated by COVID-19. The unique constellation of SCD manifestations complicate both the diagnosis and management of COVID-19, particularly related to anticoagulation and transfusion practices. Understanding the impact of early exchange and anticoagulation can help guide development of appropriate treatment guidelines and future understanding of pathophysiology. Once hospitalized, the timing of intubation is an important clinical decision for COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure. Clinically, there has been substantial debate around the timing of intubation: too early may needlessly subject patients to complication of invasive mechanical ventilation; too late may further the inflammatory cytokine release and result in additional injury to lungs and kidneys. The Cerner COVID-19 data set provided the patient population size necessary for these two investigations otherwise not possible with the patient size coming from a single healthcare system in Delaware with a population of just under 1 million residents. The insights gleaned from these two studies will have significant impact on clinical practice ultimately resulting in improved health outcomes for patients with COVID-19 who also suffer from SCD, as well as those needing mechanical ventilation.

Life is about tradeoffs, making tough decisions and managing the unexpected. Healthcare organizations have learned that tradeoffs can be good. Take, for instance, the transition to enterprise document capture solutions. The impact is real. Less paper translates into gains in efficiency and the reduction in the bottom line. Human nature is also real; the hardest tasks are saved for last. Case in point - the remaining paper artifacts tend to be complex clinical forms requiring signatures or documents coming from outside of their organization.
During this session, you'll learn how Enterprise Document Management solutions have the intelligence and flexibility to help you manage the tradeoffs, make the tough decisions, and navigate the unexpected.
